You can hear a pin drop in the huge arena, this most famous and vastest of all equestrian stadiums, this traditional ring at the Soers in Aachen. When the riders are fighting for victory in the Rolex Grand Prix at the World Equestrian Festival, CHIO Aachen, you don’t want to be anywhere else in the world. The horses are well-groomed and gleaming, as are the riders. The flags flutter in the wind, the grandstands are filled with high-spirited people, the mood is euphoric. Everyone senses that on this day history is going to be written in this place. Aachen – since 1898 this legend in the history of equestrian sport has been nursed, nurtured and continually further developed. Aachen – it is like an opera with its drama and passion, pathos and emotion-charged moments. When Aachen rolls out the red carpet for the horses, they all come running: the most famous horses in the world all compete in the Soers’ arenas. And they all bring their equally famous riders with them. High-class, emotional and international, that is how to describe the days at the Aachen stadium. Of course this is due to the horses and riders, but also and primarily due to this excellent crowd. A crowd that understands how to cheer on the equestrian athletes like no other. It celebrates every horse and rider combination as if they have just won the Rolex Grand Prix. Even if they actually knocked down five fences and picked up extra faults for exceeding the allotted time. And this has been true for many decades. Since 1898, the world elite have been meeting up at the western tip of Germany to compete against each other. It all started with horse races, soon afterwards jumping competitions were added to the schedule. The organization of the competitions became more and more professional, until in the 1920s international competitions were also incorporated into the programme. Up until this very day, nine World and European Championships in show jumping alone have been organized here, including the unforgettable FEI World Equestrian Games in the year 2006. In the meantime over 350,000 visitors travel to the Soers every year to enjoy the competitions in five equestrian disciplines. More than 600 journalists bring coverage of the competitions; TV images are broadcast in 140 countries. Aachen is a bit like having an Olympic Games every year. And even more than that, it is a legendary place and that is what causes its special atmosphere. Equestrian sport history is written in Aachen. Every year.
