interview: the big three Rolex grand slam magazine 68 Open, what did this victory feel like and how did you deal with the pressure afterwards? That first victory of course was a pretty special one. I enjoyed it for a while, but it took me a couple months to be successful again. But winning that first Major Championship does give you the confidence to build upon going forward. I have never been one to worry about pressure or feel pressure. Once you win a Major, the pressure is off your back. Now it was about how to grow and how to get better. Holding the record of an incredible 18 Major triumphs and three career Grand Slams, you dominated the Major Championships for more than two decades.  What was the secret of your success? Do you have some advice for today’s athletes and their challenge of winning a Grand Slam? Preparation. Patience. Planning your schedule. I always built my schedule around the Major Championships to make sure I was able to peak at the right time. And then it was about preparation. My wife Barbara has an expression: “There’s no excuse for not being properly prepared.” That’s why I went to most Major Championship venues a week in advance. People have asked me many times over the years how I dealt with pressure. You handle pressure by being prepared. You prepare yourself for those moments and embrace them. And as for patience, that is critical for any athlete, especially a young player trying to win a Major. In conversations with young talents that was the one word I passed along to them: Patience. arnold palmer 1962
