Both the marathon of the four-in-hand and the eventing’s cross-country competitions are invitations to rediscover the primal thrill of speed and share the riders’ exhilaration, as the ground trembles from the pounding hooves. This surge of adrenaline is surpassed only by the last act of the drama in the main stadium: the quest for victory in the “Rolex Grand Prix”. A tense silence reigns, broken only by the horses’ threebeat canter on the grass and the sound of one’s own heartbeat, as tens of thousands of people hold their breath over the final metres of the course. The cheers of the crowd – 80,000 hands applauding – drown the moment when the last pole stays up. Two are our own, but part of a whole. The atmosphere is euphoric. Finally, on the last day, after the “Rolex Grand Prix”, all the heroes are invited once more onto the big stage under the floodlights. They complete their final lap of honour through the main stadium, as tens of thousands of handkerchiefs wave goodbye and the clouds in the sky turn lilac again.
